Go Back
Visiting the Mother Theresa shelterBy Andrew DumasDecember 5 , 2024 We were not allowed to take photos inside. The missionary sisters were caring for many children ranging in age from birth to ten years old. All the children had severe mental disabilities, and some also had physical disabilities. At first, the group was hesitant, unsure of what to do. I, however, did not hesitate. I moved quickly to the first child, placed my hand on their shoulder, and said, "Hello, how are you? It's good to see you. How is your day going?" Some children did not respond at all, while others immediately smiled, simply enjoying our presence. The group soon followed my example, greeting the children with kind words and actions. Some of the children, in particular, wanted to be held. Many of the girls gave them big hugs, holding them in their arms, fully aware that these children had no mother to comfort them. Thursday is usually the sisters’ day off, but they made an exception for us. They recognized the goodness of our visit and appreciated the joy we brought to the small children in their care. As we left, it felt as though a part of us stayed behind. The small amount of love we shared and the memory of what caring for another can truly mean remained. It reminded us of the profound truth that every person is deeply loved.
